So, the characters were talking about some of their experiences, but it wasn’t written into the book, so it leaves readers confused about what they were discussing. For instance, a couple of the characters would have a conversation about something that had happened to them before Rainbow had began the story. And let’s be real, I don’t think anything can compare to Harry Potter, am I right?Īnother thing that I didn’t really like about the story was there were parts where the reader was basically assumed to know something. It just has a very unoriginal world and plot, because it’s almost identical to the Harry Potter world. It honestly bothered me because in comparison to HP, this was a really cheesy story. If you have read Harry Potter and then you read Carry On, you will notice an obvious relation to the Harry Potter world. I love Rainbow Rowell’s writing style, but one thing that bothered me was the closeness to Harry Potter. It did start to pick up after that though and I really began enjoying the story. Not much happened in the start and I found myself a little bored with the plot. I’d say the first 1/4th of the book was slow for me. I did enjoy the story once I got into it though. With that said, it was a little weird for me to read a book like this one. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against it, I just haven’t ever read a story with a gay couple. The reason being that I am definitely NOT used to reading a story with LGBT characters. Honestly, I was a little nervous going into this book. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here-it’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. Half the time, Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right. Summary: Simon Snow is the worst chosen one who’s ever been chosen.
